APGA Denies Expelling Senator Abaribe Confirms He Resigned Voluntarily

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Abia State has refuted claims that it expelled Enyinnaya Abaribe, the Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, insisting that the lawmaker voluntarily resigned from the party.

Speaking in an interview with Vanguard, APGA Abia State Chairman Sunday Onukwubiri stated that Abaribe was suspended in September 2025 but later submitted a resignation letter on December 30, 2025, to the chairman of Ahiaba Ward 5 in Obingwa Local Government Area.

“Let it be known that Senator Abaribe was neither sacked nor expelled from the party. He resigned from the party on December 30, 2025, and submitted his resignation letter to the Ahiaba Ward 5 chairman of Obingwa LGA,” Onukwubiri said.

He questioned the senator’s claim of expulsion, noting that the submission of a resignation letter three months after the alleged sack contradicted such assertions. “If Senator Abaribe was sacked as he claimed in September 2025, why did he submit a letter of resignation in December 2025? Ordinarily, anyone who has been expelled is no longer a member of the organisation. But after three months of the purported sack, he filed a resignation letter,” the chairman added.

Onukwubiri also emphasised that APGA had no crisis either at the state or national level and described the party as one of the most peaceful in the country. He stated that Abaribe did not respond to the suspension notice issued by the party before eventually resigning.

“In politics, when you are suspended, you can come and ask what you did wrong. But Abaribe never responded to the party. Even before the suspension, the party leadership wrote to him around July or August 2025, reminding him that since he assumed office, he had not called party leaders to a meeting, not even at the zonal level,” he explained.

The APGA leadership also highlighted that the senator failed to convene a meeting as requested to discuss party progress. Additionally, APGA’s State Publicity Secretary Chukwuemeka Nwokoro alleged that some of Abaribe’s associates had attempted to secure letters from former party members on his behalf, describing it as “secret moves” uncovered within the past 48 hours.
