APC Faces Impending Implosion Amid Defections, Warns PDP’s Kola Ologbondiyan

Kola Ologbondiyan, a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has warned that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is on the brink of an internal crisis it may not survive. Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday, May 12, 2025, Ologbondiyan argued that the recent wave of defections to the APC, including high-profile figures like Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, could deilize the ruling party rather than strengthen it.

Ologbondiyan highlighted the APC’s internal fragmentation, noting that the opposition was less divided during former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration compared to the current administration under President Bola Tinubu. He pointed out that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), led by Tinubu, and the Congress for Progressive Ce (CPC), brought by Buhari, are now deeply fractured within the APC. “President Tinubu brought ACN into the APC, are they united today? They are fragmented. Former President Muhammadu Buhari brought the CPC into the APC, are they united today? They are fragmented,” he stated.

The PDP chieftain predicted a “season of implosion” for the APC, suggesting that the party’s leadership is unaware of who might defect next. He attributed the defections to the APC’s alleged threats of witch-hunts, citing a former APC National Chairman’s promise to “forgive all sins” for defectors. However, Ologbondiyan emphasized that despite these defections, the APC cannot sway Nigeria’s over 200 million citizens, who will ultimately determine the 2027 election outcome. Posts on X, such as those from @AbuAlechenu and @NewsCentralTV, echo this sentiment, predicting a dramatic collapse of the APC due to its absorption of opposition figures.

The defection of Oborevwori, Okowa, and several lawmakers has significantly weakened the PDP in Delta State, where the party has governed for over two decades. Ologbondiyan, however, downplayed the PDP’s losses, arguing that defections are a normal part of political realignment ahead of elections. He referenced a May 1, 2025, interview on Arise Television, where he noted that some APC blocs, including the CPC, are already agitating, signaling trouble for the ruling party.

As the 2027 elections approach, Ologbondiyan’s warning underscores the volatile nature of Nigeria’s political landscape, with both the APC and PDP grappling with internal challenges that could reshape the country’s political future.
