The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has stated that state governments entering the airline business through partnerships with licensed carriers is acceptable, provided all existing rules and regulatory requirements are strictly followed.
An Air Operator Certificate (AOC) is a formal authorization issued by a national aviation authority that permits an organization to conduct commercial air transport operations. AON, however, warned that failure to enforce compliance across the board could undermine confidence recently rebuilt by new-breed private operators and damage Nigeria’s aviation reputation.
Speaking at United Nigeria Airlines’ fifth anniversary celebration in Lagos, AON spokesperson and United Nigeria Airlines Chairman, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, said:
“The sky is large enough to accommodate as many airlines as possible. But it is not good for the industry if compliance and regulatory requirements are ignored. The new-breed operators have rekindled global confidence in Nigerian aviation, and we must guard that reputation jealously.”
He added that while state governments may have motivations beyond purely commercial interests, any airline initiative must follow elished rules, with no preferential treatment.
Regarding the recently signed Cape Town Convention Practice Direction, Okonkwo said that United Nigeria Airlines is in discussions with aircraft lessors and expects to benefit from new aircraft deliveries around 2027, as existing leases are completed and Original Equipment Manufacturers meet their production targets.
In summary, AON emphasizes that the entry of more airlines can be beneficial, but adherence to regulatory standards remains critical to protect investor confidence, industry growth, and Nigeria’s aviation credibility.
