The Llogara Tunnel, a significant infrastructure project in Albania, officially opened on July 5, 2024, marking a transformative development for the country’s transportation network. This 5.9-kilometer tunnel, the longest in Albania, dramatically reduces travel time between Dukat and Palasë, cutting the journey from approximately 30 minutes to just 7 minutes.

The tunnel comprises two main sections: the primary tunnel and an emergency tunnel, both equipped with 11 connecting passages. Designed for a maximum speed of 80 km/h, the Llogara Tunnel facilitates smoother and faster travel, bypassing the challenging Llogara Pass.

The Albanian government invested approximately €140 million in this project, underscoring its commitment to enhancing national infrastructure. The tunnel is expected to play a pivotal role in boosting tourism along the Albanian Riviera by providing quicker access to the southern coastal regions.

Following its initial opening, the tunnel underwent a seven-month closure to complete additional works, including the construction of the emergency tunnel. It reopened on May 24, 2025, with free access granted to all vehicles until September 15, 2025. This seasonal initiative aims to accommodate the influx of tourists during the summer months.

The Llogara Tunnel is anticipated to significantly impact Albania’s economy by improving connectivity and promoting tourism. Its strategic location and advanced design make it a vital asset for the country’s infrastructure, offering a modern solution to previously time-consuming and challenging routes.
