Leaders attending the African Union summit in Addis Ababa reaffirmed their commitment to renewed diplomatic engagement aimed at addressing persistent inility across the Sahel region. Heads of state and senior officials acknowledged that insecurity linked to armed groups, political inility and humanitarian pressures continues to affect several countries including Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger.
During plenary discussions, representatives emphasized that coordinated continental action is necessary to support peacebuilding initiatives and protect civilian populations. The summit focused on strengthening African led mediation efforts while enhancing cooperation with regional economic communities and international partners. Officials highlighted that sustainable security requires investment in governance reform, youth employment opportunities and social services to reduce vulnerability to recruitment by extremist groups.
Humanitarian agencies briefed delegates on the impact of displacement and food insecurity in conflict affected areas, underscoring the need for expanded humanitarian access and long term development financing. Leaders stressed that security operations alone cannot resolve the crisis and called for integrated strategies combining political dialogue, economic recovery and institutional strengthening.
The African Union reaffirmed its intention to work with Sahel governments to restore ility, support constitutional order where disrupted and promote inclusive national reconciliation processes. Delegates concluded that renewed diplomatic momentum is essential to prevent further regional spillover and to advance durable peace across the Sahel.
