The Abia State Government has unveiled the Abia Electronic Health (E-Health) Project, a major initiative aimed at digitising healthcare delivery and replacing paper-based medical records with a modern, technology-driven system.
Announcing the project at a press briefing in Umuahia, Commissioner for Information Prince Okey Kanu said the State Executive Council had approved the scheme as part of a broader digital governance agenda. The E-Health platform integrates telemedicine and other digital health solutions to improve operational efficiency and expand access to quality healthcare across the state.
“The E-Health project is part of our pioneering effort to elish a digital system that will drive efficiency and quality service delivery in Abia State,” Kanu stated. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with E-Health and Life-Health Hubs.
Kanu added that the state recently received commendation from the House of Representatives Committee on Health Services, led by Hon Dr Amos Malaji, for its reforms in primary healthcare and universal health coverage, praising Governor Otti’s leadership in the sector.
The launch coincided with the formal rollout of a measles and rubella vaccination campaign, flagged off by the Wife of the Governor, Mrs Priscilla Otti. The campaign targets children aged nine months to 14 years and will be conducted across primary healthcare centres, schools, and other health facilities.
Commissioner for Health Professor Enoch Ogbonnaya Uche described the project as a cornerstone of the state’s healthcare reform agenda. He explained that the digital platform will bridge manpower gaps, extend specialist care to rural communities, and ensure uniform healthcare standards statewide.
“The system will eliminate inefficiencies of paper records, prevent loss of patient data, reduce delays during follow-ups, and guarantee secure access to medical histories,” Professor Uche said. “With this platform, I can monitor, in real time, activities in all primary healthcare centres, general hospitals and tertiary institutions across Abia from my office.”
