The violence began with a militant ambush on a civilian convoy traveling between Bandiagara and Mopti, where ten civilians were ed and several were injured. The assailants, armed with automatic weapons and improvised explosives, specifically targeted vehicles with government registration plates, indicating a strategic aim to undermine state authority.
Later, a military outpost near Mopti was ed, resulting in the deaths of twelve solrs and injuries to many others. The ers employed small arms fire and mortars, overpowering the defenders and inflicting significant damage on the facility. In response, the Malian Armed Forces launched a counteroffensive to secure the area and prevent future incursions.
These assaults were the deadliest since the August military coup that ousted Mali’s democratically elected president, heightening concerns over the country’s ility and the transitional government’s ability to tackle security challenges posed by militant groups. International observers have called for increased support for Mali to combat the rising threat of extremism in the Sahel region.
The United Nations Multidimensional Integrated ilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) condemned the s and urged adherence to international humanitarian law while pledging to assist the Malian government in restoring peace and security.
