Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde was reportedly treated in hospital after an incident involving teammate Aurelien Tchouameni following a training session on Thursday.
According to several Spanish media reports, the Uruguay international suffered a facial injury that required stitches after tensions escalated between the two players during and after training at Real Madrid’s Valdebebas facility.
Reports stated that Valverde was accompanied to a nearby hospital by Real Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa for treatment.
Spanish newspaper Marca reported that the injury was accidental and not the result of a deliberate punch from Tchouameni. The disagreement between the midfielders allegedly began during Wednesday’s training session before continuing into Thursday.
Media reports also claimed that Valverde refused to shake Tchouameni’s hand during training and later committed a rough challenge on the French midfielder. The disagreement reportedly continued in the dressing room, where the facial injury occurred.
Neither Real Madrid nor representatives of the two players publicly commented on the incident when contacted by media outlets.
The reported clash comes at a tense period for Real Madrid as the club faces the possibility of finishing a second straight season without a major trophy.
Real Madrid are preparing for a crucial El Clasico clash against rivals FC Barcelona in La Liga on Sunday. Barcelona currently sit 11 points clear at the top of the table and could secure consecutive league titles if they avoid defeat.
The atmosphere around the club has reportedly become increasingly tense as pressure mounts ahead of the decisive fixture.
