Senegal advanced to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 3-1 victory over Sudan in Tangier on Saturday. Sudan initially took the lead in the sixth minute with a stunning shot from Aamir Abdallah that left goalkeeper Edouard Mendy helpless.

However, Senegal quickly responded, equalizing in the 29th minute when Sadio Mané intercepted a midfield pass and assisted Pape Gueye, who scored with a low shot. Just before halftime, Gueye struck again, finishing a cross from Nicolas Jackson with a curling effort.

In the second half, although Sudan pressed for an equalizer, Senegal’s defense remained resolute. The match was sealed in the 77th minute when substitute Ibrahim Mbaye, benefiting from another pass from Mané, scored at the near post. This crucial goal confirmed Senegal’s place in the quarterfinals, where they will face the winner of the Mali-Tunisia match.

Sadio Mané’s remarkable performance included two assists, bringing his total to nine assists in the Africa Cup of Nations, a new record surpassing Ivory Coast’s Yaya Touré, who held the previous record of seven. This victory emphasizes Senegal’s resilience and depth, showcasing a mix of experienced players and promising youngsters like Mbaye.

As the tournament progresses, Senegal’s blend of talent and determination has positioned them as one of the favorites, and all eyes will be on their next matches to see if they can maintain their impressive form in pursuit of the continental title.
