Former Wayne Rooney has spoken candidly about the most difficult stage in a footballer’s career, saying the hardest reality is accepting when a player is no longer at their peak.
Rooney, who enjoyed a decorated spell at Manchester United after joining from Everton in 2004, made 559 appearances and scored 253 goals, winning multiple Premier League titles, the Champions League, Europa League, and FA Cup during his time at Old Trafford.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, he reflected on his own career transition, including his decision to leave United in 2017 after falling down the pecking order. He explained that the arrival of players like Zlatan Ibrahimović influenced his decision to move on, as he still wanted regular playing time.
Rooney used the example to highlight how ageing affects even the best players, drawing comparisons with modern stars such as Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool FC.
He suggested that physical decline is inevitable, noting that even elite performers can struggle to maintain previous levels as they get older. According to him, such transitions also impact team leadership dynamics, making it harder for squads to evolve when senior players are no longer at their peak.
Rooney acknowledged that while some players remain at clubs longer than they perhaps should, he stopped short of advising Van Dijk to leave Liverpool.
He also reflected on Liverpool’s managerial evolution, praising former boss Jürgen Klopp for his charisma and influence. He contrasted Klopp’s presence with current manager Arne Slot, suggesting that leadership style can significantly affect a club’s identity.
Rooney admitted he would have loved to play under Klopp, although not for Liverpool, and highlighted the German manager’s connection with fans and personality off the pitch.
His comments come amid ongoing debate about ageing stars in top European football and how clubs manage transitions between generations of players.
