Liverpool Held by Chelsea in Frustrating Draw at Anfield

Liverpool F.C. missed the opportunity to move c to securing UEFA Champions League qualification after being held to a 1 1 draw by Chelsea F.C. at Anfield on Saturday.

Liverpool started brightly and took the lead just six minutes into the match through Ryan Gravenberch.

The midfielder curled a superb effort into the top corner after being set up by youngster Rio Ngumoha.

Despite their early dominance, Liverpool struggled to maintain ing pressure as injuries to key players weakened their forward line. The absence of Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz, and Hugo Ekitike limited the Reds going forward, while Alexander Isak was only fit enough for the bench.

Chelsea gradually grew into the game and found an equaliser 10 minutes before halftime through Enzo Fernandez. His free kick evaded everyone in the penalty area and rolled past goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili into the bottom corner.

The visitors nearly completed the comeback early in the second half when Cole Palmer scored, but VAR ruled the goal out after Marc Cucurella was judged to be marginally offside during the build up.

Liverpool pushed for a late winner and came close on several occasions. Dominik Szoboszlai struck the post with a powerful effort, while captain Virgil van Dijk hit the crossbar with a header from a corner.
The result leaves Liverpool seven points clear of sixth placed Bournemouth with three matches remaining as they continue their chase for Champions League qualification next season.

Chelsea remain ninth in the table and can no longer mathematically finish in the top five. However, interim manager Calum McFarlane will take positives from the performance ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup final against Manchester City F.C..
