Karim Benzema, the French football star and 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, has made a high-profile move to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, signing a lucrative contract that could see him earn up to $100 million annually until 2026. This transfer marks a significant shift in Benzema’s illustrious career, transitioning from European football to the Saudi Pro League.

The 35-year-old forward, who spent 14 years at Real Madrid, departed the Spanish club after his contract expired. Al-Ittihad, based in Jeddah, secured his signature on a three-year deal, with an option for a fourth year. While the exact terms of the contract have not been publicly disclosed, reports indicate that Benzema’s annual earnings could reach up to $100 million, making him one of the highest-paid athletes globally.

In addition to his base salary, Benzema is set to receive substantial bonuses. Notably, he is expected to earn a €20 million bonus for serving as an ambassador for Saudi Arabia’s bid to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup. This role underscores the country’s ambition to elevate its international profile through sports.

Benzema’s move to Al-Ittihad follows in the footsteps of his former Real Madrid teammate, Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Al Nassr in January 2023. Ronaldo’s reported annual earnings are approximately $214 million, primarily due to image rights and commercial deals. Benzema’s contract, while substantial, is slightly lower, reflecting the competitive nature of the Saudi Pro League in attracting top-tier talent.

The Saudi Pro League has been actively investing in high-profile players to raise its competitive standards and global visibility. Benzema’s arrival is part of this strategic initiative, aiming to enhance the league’s appeal and attract international attention. His experience and leadership are expected to significantly contribute to Al-Ittihad’s ambitions both domestically and in continental competitions.

Benzema expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge, stating, “I am excited to experience a new football league in a different country. I have been fortunate to achieve amazing things in my career and achieve everything I can in Spain and Europe.” He added, “It now feels the time is right for a new challenge and project… I am looking forward to joining my new teammates and, together with them, help take this amazing club and the game in Saudi Arabia to new levels.”

Al-Ittihad’s president, Anmar al-Haeli, highlighted the significance of the signing, stating, “Benzema’s arrival is the most impactful transfer in the club’s history to date.”

The club’s management anticipates that Benzema’s presence will not only bolster their on-field performance but also elevate the profile of Saudi football on the international stage.

As Benzema embarks on this new chapter with Al-Ittihad, his move is poised to have a lasting impact on the Saudi Pro League, setting a precedent for future high-profile signings and signaling the league’s growing influence in the global football landscape.
