The Federal Government has inaugurated a Gas to Power Monitoring Committee as part of efforts to resolve persistent gas supply challenges affecting electricity generation across the country. The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, described the initiative as a decisive intervention aimed at addressing one of the most critical obstacles in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry.

The move follows a significant drop in electricity generation earlier this year when gas companies reduced supply to power generation firms due to over one point three billion dollars in outstanding debts. Gas fired plants, which account for about eighty percent of Nigeria electricity output, have continued to struggle with supply disruptions, pipeline vandalism, financial constraints, and weak coordination among stakeholders.

According to the minister, the committee was elished after key issues were identified during the first quarter twenty twenty six Ministerial Power Sector Working Group meeting. These issues include infrastructure gaps, liquidity problems, and pricing concerns that continue to hinder le electricity supply.

Adelabu stated that the committee will actively monitor and resolve bottlenecks affecting gas availability to power plants. This includes ensuring repairs of damaged pipelines, facilitating debt payments to gas suppliers, and improving operational and commercial frameworks within the sector.

He urged members to go beyond routine oversight and deliver practical and data driven solutions, especially in ensuring sustainable payment systems for gas supply. The committee is expected to provide measurable results through regular reporting and clear milestones.

The government expressed confidence that the diverse representation within the committee will help drive lasting improvements in electricity generation and support economic growth nationwide.
