A bitter dispute has broken out between the widow of late Nigerian boxer Gabriel Olanrewaju and his family over donations and assets following his death in Ghana.

Olanrewaju, popularly known as Success, collapsed during a bout against Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu on March 29 2025 at the Trust Sports Emporium Boxing Arena in Accra. He was later pronounced dead at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. His remains were repatriated after 81 days and buried on June 18 2025 at Atan Cemetery in Ogun State.

His partner, Adebusola, told The PUNCH that funds paid by the Ghana Boxing Authority were withheld by the boxer’s relatives. According to her, 3000 dollars was paid, with 1000 dollars allegedly taken by the family, while 2000 dollars was set aside for their two children but restricted until they turn 18.

She also claimed that the family sold Olanrewaju’s commercial bus without giving her any proceeds, leaving her financially stranded with two young children.

However, the boxer’s family has denied the allegations. In videos posted online, his mother, Agnes Olanrewaju, rejected claims that she collected any money from Ghana and accused Adebusola of cursing her son before his fatal trip. His sister, Anuoluwapo Olanrewaju, also disputed Adebusola’s status as a wife, stating that no legal or traditional marriage was conducted.

Adebusola admitted they were not legally married but said they lived together as a family and planned to formalise the union after her stus.

The dispute has intensified tensions, with both sides trading accusations over finances, marriage status and treatment before and after the boxer’s death. Meanwhile, the couple’s two young children remain at the centre of the conflict as uncertainty surrounds access to funds meant for their welfare.
