Enugu Rangers’ hopes of advancing in the CAF Champions League were dashed after a 3-1 defeat to Angolan club Sagrada Esperanca on Sunday. The loss, which took place in Angola, ended Rangers’ journey in the competition, leaving Nigeria without a representative in the group stage.
Rangers had gone into the second-leg match with a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg of the second-round qualifier. However, the Angolan side overturned the deficit, winning 3-2 on aggregate to progress in the tournament.
The elimination is a major disappointment for Rangers, who had hoped to carry Nigeria’s flag deeper into the prestigious African competition. Despite their early lead in the first leg, the team was unable to hold off a resilient Sagrada Esperanca, who capitalized on their home advantage to secure the win.
With Rangers’ exit, Nigerian clubs will now turn their attention to domestic competitions and next year’s continental tournaments.
