The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled April 29 for the arraignment of Tracynither Ohiri over allegations of cyberstalking and defamation against the Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Presiding judge, James Omotosho, fixed the date after the prosecution requested a short adjournment to enable proper service of court documents on the defendant, who was absent during proceedings.
The prosecution counsel, Wisdom Madaki, informed the court that efforts to locate and serve Ohiri had been unsuccessful. According to him, the Investigating Police Officer and his team traveled to Lagos but could not reach the defendant, as her residence was reportedly locked during their visit.
Justice Omotosho emphasized the need for diligence, warning against delays and stressing that the prosecution must demonstrate concrete efforts in moving the case forward. The judge had earlier cautioned that the matter could be struck out if the defendant was not produced for arraignment.
Ohiri faces a 13 count charge filed by the police, bordering on cyberstalking and defamation under the Cybercrimes Act. The allegations stem from a series of social media posts, including videos shared on TikTok and other platforms, in which she reportedly made claims against Umahi.
The charges include accusations that she published statements alleging threats to her life, claims of victimization, and financial disputes involving the minister. Prosecutors argue that the statements were knowingly false and intended to cause reputational harm and public distress.
The case also alleges that the content was widely circulated across social media, amplifying its impact and potentially inciting public hostility.
With the new arraignment date set, the court is expected to proceed with taking the defendant’s plea, provided she is successfully served and appears before the court.
