On Christmas Eve 2025, the UK’s ATM network is projected to experience a surge, with nearly £370 million expected to be withdrawn, driven by last-minute shoppers. According to Link, the UK’s largest ATM network, individuals are expected to withdraw an average of slightly over £120 each, indicating a continued reliance on cash for holiday shopping despite the rise of digital payments.

Historically, the busiest cash withdrawal day was December 22, 2017, with £766 million withdrawn, signifying a slight decrease in 2025. This trend reflects a broader shift towards digital transactions; however, many still prefer cash, especially during the festive period. The midweek timing of Christmas this year, with December 25 falling on a Thursday, contributes to the urgency, as consumers finalize their holiday preparations in the preceding days.

Additionally, Link’s survey reveals that nearly half of Christmas shoppers spread their purchases throughout December, which helps in managing budgets and reduces last-minute stress. Only 7% of shoppers leave their purchases until the final days, with individuals under 25 particularly inclined to procrastinate.

As the holiday season unfolds, it’s vital for consumers to strategically plan their cash withdrawals in anticipation of the high demand on Christmas Eve. Ensuring timely access to cash is essential for those who rely on ATMs for festive spending.

In summary, Christmas Eve 2025 is set to be a significant day for ATM withdrawals in the UK, underlining the lasting role of cash in holiday shopping and emphasizing the need for careful financial planning during the season.
