AFCON 2027 Faces Possible Delay to 2028 Over East Africa Hosting Concerns

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations could be postponed to 2028 amid growing concerns about the readiness of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda to host the tournament, according to reports. The potential delay may also result in the scrapping of one AFCON edition as the Confederation of African Football reviews its competition calendar.

CAF executive committee members are expected to discuss the proposal at a meeting in Dar es Salaam on Friday. The agenda will also reportedly include Morocco possible withdrawal as host of next month Women Afcon.

CAF president Patrice Motsepe announced in December that AFCON would transition from a biennial to a four year cycle starting from 2028. Under the revised plan, the 2027 tournament would be hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, while the 2029 edition would be brought forward to 2028.

However, sources within CAF have raised concerns about infrastructure readiness across the three East African nations. The 24 team tournament is scheduled to be staged across 10 cities, but doubts remain over stadium completion, logistics, and security capacity. Challenges experienced during last year Africa Nations Championships have further intensified scrutiny.

There are also scheduling complications, as up to 10 African teams could be involved in this year World Cup, creating pressure on the international calendar for qualifiers.

A postponement would likely mean cancelling the planned 2028 edition, clearing the path for CAF to introduce its proposed African Nations League in 2029.

Despite the concerns, Motsepe has insisted the 2027 tournament will proceed, emphasizing CAF commitment to expanding football infrastructure beyond traditional host nations.
