A commander from the Boko Haram affiliated Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad faction has surrendered to Nigerian military forces alongside three fighters and a woman in Borno State. The development marks a significant gain for troops operating under Operations Hadin Kai and Desert Sanity V in the volatile northeastern region.
The five individuals, identified as commander Ishiaku Agah, fighters Sulieman Yaga, Iburija Chari, Ba’ana Modu, and civilian Falmata Modu, turned themselves in to the 21 Special Armoured Brigade in the Kumburi area of Bama Local Government. Security sources indicate they surrendered late Friday evening, arriving from the Bula Daloye area with substantial ammunition including 358 rounds of 7.62 x 54mm ammunition.
The surrender reportedly follows escalating violence between rival terrorist factions JAS and the Islamic State West Africa Province, compounded by intensified intelligence driven military operations that have significantly weakened insurgent networks. These internal conflicts have created mounting pressure on fighters across the theater of operations.
Military authorities report that while the general security situation remains calm but unpredictable, troops continue maintaining high morale and operational readiness. The surrendered individuals remain in military custody as forces monitor for additional defections from weakened terrorist ranks.
