The former Governor of Benue State, Chief Samuel Ortom, has dismissed rumors of factions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He affirmed that the party’s leadership, under the Umar Damagum-led National Working Committee (NWC), is the only recognized authority. Ortom made these remarks while hosting members of the newly elected Benue State Working Committee (SWC) of the PDP at his residence in Makurdi.
Ortom expressed support for the Damagum-led NWC, acknowledging their efforts amidst the party’s ongoing challenges. He stressed that, rather than criticizing the leadership, party members should offer support and prayers. “There is no faction in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and we remain committed to equity, fairness, and justice. I have not drifted from that, and we are committed and loyal to the party,” Ortom stated.
He further emphasized that they do not want to be part of any dissident group, nor do they belong to one, reinforcing his backing for the current NWC. He acknowledged that while the leadership is not perfect, they have made commendable efforts to manage the party’s affairs under difficult circumstances.
“If there are issues, there are various organs of the leadership of the party to address such. The Board of Trustees (BOT), the Governors’ Forum, the National Executive Committee (NEC), and the National Working Committee (NWC) itself are there, including other stakeholders. If there are issues, they should be discussed at this level,” Ortom asserted.
Ortom called for unity within the party, reiterating that any disagreements should be resolved through established party structures and mechanisms. He urged members to recognize the importance of cohesion and solidarity, emphasizing that these values are crucial for the party’s progress and success.
The former governor’s comments come at a time when the PDP is facing internal challenges, but he remains optimistic about the party’s future. By reaffirming his commitment to the leadership and urging others to do the same, Ortom aims to foster unity and ensure that issues are addressed constructively within the party’s framework.
