Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has approved an increase in the minimum wage for civil servants in the state to N85,000. This decision aims to alleviate the economic challenges faced by workers and was reached during a closed-door meeting with representatives of the organized labor under the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council at Government House, Port Harcourt, on Friday.
Dr. George Nwaeke, Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, announced the governor’s approval of the new minimum wage, which exceeds the national rate. He confirmed that the government would begin implementing the new wage structure in November 2024.
“He (Governor Fubara) has set a figure that is higher than the national minimum wage, approving N85,000. This is a significant development for civil servants in Rivers State, who have never had it this good since the state’s inception,” Nwaeke stated.
Plan for Arrears Payment
When asked about the payment of arrears, Dr. Nwaeke disclosed that a technical committee had been formed to develop a feasible payment plan addressing arrears. He mentioned that he would serve as Deputy to the Secretary to the State Government on this committee, which will finalize the details and inform the public accordingly.
Labor Representatives Praise Governor’s Decision
Comrade Emecheta Chuku, Chairman of the Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, commended the N85,000 minimum wage as a generous gesture from the governor, demonstrating his support for the workers. He expressed gratitude for Governor Fubara’s dedication despite the challenges facing the state.
“For the governor to approve this new minimum wage amidst all the difficulties is a clear demonstration of his commitment to the well-being of the workers. We are overjoyed by this decision,” Chuku stated.
Similarly, Comrade Alex Agwanwor, Chairman of the Rivers State Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), noted that Rivers is now among the leading states in the country in terms of minimum wage, matching the recently approved wage in Lagos State.
“With both Lagos and Rivers approving N85,000, despite their differing Internally Generated Revenues (IGRs), this places Rivers State at the forefront. The governor has proven once again that he is the most labor-friendly governor in Nigeria, and we fully support him,” Agwanwor added.
