Former National Auditor of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barrister Ray Nnaji, has voiced his concerns over the party’s prolonged tolerance of Nyesom Wike, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and former Governor of Rivers State. Nnaji’s comments have sparked discussions within political circles, as they highlight growing tensions within the party.
In a recent statement, Nnaji criticized the PDP for what he described as its leniency towards Wike, particularly during his tenure as governor and in the aftermath of the 2023 general elections. According to Nnaji, Wike’s actions, which included open defiance of the party’s leadership and public criticism of key figures within the PDP, should have been addressed much earlier. He believes that the failure to rein in Wike’s conduct has led to unnecessary internal divisions and weakened the party’s unity.
Nnaji pointed out that Wike’s influence within the PDP had become a source of contention, especially during the party’s presidential primaries, where he was seen as a formidable contender but ultimately lost the ticket. His subsequent actions, including his alignment with opposition elements and perceived undermining of the party’s presidential campaign, were viewed by many as detrimental to the PDP’s interests.
The former National Auditor stressed that by failing to take decisive action, the PDP allowed Wike to operate without accountability, ultimately damaging the party’s image and cohesion. Nnaji expressed concerns about Wike’s current position as FCT Minister under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, noting that this has further complicated his relationship with the PDP.
As the PDP navigates these internal challenges, Nnaji’s remarks serve as a call for the party to reassess its approach to handling dissenting voices within its ranks. He urged the leadership to take firm steps to prevent future disruptions that could jeopardize the party’s future electoral prospects and internal stability.
