The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has assured Nigerians that the cost of electricity may see a reduction in the coming months, as efforts are being made to improve the generation and distribution of power across the country. This statement comes amid concerns over the rising cost of living and energy expenses.
During a courtesy visit from the Executive Secretary of the National Lottery Trust Fund, Mr. Tosin Adeyanju, and his management team at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, the Minister emphasized that electricity remains significantly cheaper than the cost of running generators on petrol or diesel, given the current fuel prices. He reassured Nigerians that the government is committed to stabilizing and improving the power sector to alleviate the financial burden on citizens.
Adelabu also highlighted that, despite the challenges faced by the energy sector, Nigeria’s electricity prices are still among the lowest in Africa. He pointed out that neighboring countries like Togo, Mali, and Niger Republic have higher electricity costs, making Nigeria’s rates relatively affordable. This comparison, he argued, reflects the government’s efforts to keep electricity prices as low as possible while working on enhancing supply and infrastructure.
The Minister acknowledged the existing frustrations over inconsistent power supply but reiterated that ongoing reforms in the sector would gradually yield positive results. The goal, according to Adelabu, is to improve both power generation and distribution, which would lead to a reduction in electricity costs for consumers over time.
As Nigerians anticipate these improvements, Adelabu’s comments serve as a reminder of the government’s commitment to addressing the country’s power challenges. The hope is that with better infrastructure and management, electricity will become both more affordable and more reliable, reducing the nation’s reliance on costly, pollution-heavy generators and boosting overall economic productivity.
