An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) serving in the Lagos State Police Command has tragically lost his life in a violent incident in the Agege area of the state.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning when the officer led a team to the WEMCO junction by Mobil road to respond to an accident involving a commercial motorcyclist, commonly known as an Okada rider. Upon arrival, the police team faced a hostile crowd of irate Okada riders who opposed their efforts to evacuate a truck involved in the incident.
According to Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, the officers received a distress call at approximately 1:40 a.m. regarding the accident. Initial investigations indicated that the Okada rider had collided with the trailer, resulting in the rider’s death.
As the police attempted to manage the situation and remove the truck, they were met with fierce resistance from the gathered riders, who insisted on setting the vehicle ablaze. During this confrontation, the ASP, aged 46, suffered a severe head injury and tragically died at the scene. The driver of the truck managed to escape unharmed.
In the aftermath, five suspects have been arrested, and a manhunt is underway for additional individuals involved in the attack. The police command has condemned the violence, labeling the officer’s killing as unprovoked.
