Chidi Chidebe, a former Youth Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra, was elected as the party’s new Chairman during a congress at the Women Development Centre in Awka on Thursday. Chidebe secured the position with 1,080 votes, defeating his closest contender, Amechi Onowu, who garnered 960 votes. In addition to Chidebe’s win, Charles Anierobi was elected as Deputy Chairman, and Mr. Ebele Onunkwo was named Secretary of the party.
Overseeing the election was Ifeanyi Ossai, Deputy Governor of Enugu State and Chairman of the Anambra PDP Congress Committee, who emphasized the need for unity to strengthen the party’s standing in Anambra. Ossai underscored the importance of reconciling with all party members, especially those who participated in the elections but were not elected. He urged Chidebe and the newly elected leaders to prioritize rebuilding and healing within the party.
“Anambra is crucial to the PDP,” Ossai stated, “and success in the state depends on unity among all party members.” He encouraged the new leadership to work inclusively, underscoring that collaborative efforts would be essential for securing the party’s influence in Anambra.
Reflecting on the transparent nature of the electoral process, Ossai expressed satisfaction that the congress had been fair and credible. “Last week, when we were unable to conduct the congress, I assured PDP members in Anambra that it would be free, fair, and transparent. I am pleased that we were able to uphold that commitment,” he remarked.
Chidebe’s victory is viewed as a step toward rejuvenating the party’s presence in the state, with expectations high for inclusive leadership that bridges past divides. This congress and the calls for unity signal a new chapter for the PDP in Anambra, where party cohesion could be instrumental in advancing its political goals.
