Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has withdrawn from the race for Deputy Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union. The decision came after what he described as careful consideration of his priorities and responsibilities to the nation.
In a statement posted on his LinkedIn page, Tijani explained that he chose to focus on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s transformative digital economy agenda rather than pursue the international position. The opportunity would have marked a historic first for Nigeria, as no Nigerian has served as an elected official in the ITU’s 160-year history.
Why walk away from such prestige? The minister made clear that his commitment lies with delivering enduring value to Nigerians through critical digital economy programmes currently underway. He’s betting on domestic transformation over international glory.
The withdrawal means Nigeria won’t have representation at the deputy leadership level of the global telecommunications body this cycle. Still, Tijani’s decision reflects a calculated choice to concentrate efforts on national priorities rather than split attention between local and international responsibilities.
His focus now remains squarely on implementing the administration’s digital economy vision, which he believes requires undivided attention to achieve meaningful impact for ordinary Nigerians.
