Nigerian comedian DeeOne has publicly rebuked Inspector General of Police Tunji Disu following his recent statement discouraging citizens from recording police officers during official duties. The entertainer delivered his criticism through a video posted on Instagram Thursday, warning that such remarks could spark another wave of nationwide protests.
Disu had earlier urged Nigerians to exercise restraint when filming officers. He claimed the practice was demoralizing to the Force. But DeeOne wasn’t buying it.
“Very soon, there might be another #EndSARS protest in Nigeria,” the comedian stated bluntly. He reminded viewers that viral videos of police misconduct were instrumental in igniting the original EndSARS movement. DeeOne recounted a recent visit to a police station where he encountered an intoxicated officer on duty, with colleagues openly acknowledging the situation. How can citizens feel safe if officers themselves aren’t held accountable?
The comedian argued that recording officers serves as a crucial safety measure for citizens, particularly given the absence of mandatory body cameras. He praised the Nigerian Bar Association for calling out the IGP’s position, emphasizing that no police officer should be considered above the citizens they’re sworn to protect.
