British frozen food chain Iceland Foods is set to open its first store in the Falkland Islands this December, marking what the company calls the first UK high street retail brand to elish itself in the South Atlantic archipelago. The move comes through a partnership with Kelper Stores Ltd, part of the Fortuna group, a family business with longstanding roots in the islands.
The outlet will be located at K4, Ross Road East in Stanley, the Falklands’ capital. It’s scheduled to open in early December and will stock Iceland’s own-label frozen range alongside exclusive brand agreements the company holds.
What’s the nature of this arrangement? The announcement appears to describe two models: Iceland Foods refers to a standalone store, while James Wallace, managing director of Fortuna, characterizes it as Stanley’s first franchise store. That distinction could matter for how the business operates going forward.
Richard Walker, executive chairman of Iceland Foods, framed the expansion in political terms, saying the company is proud to be backing Britain with the move. He plans to attend the opening personally. Sarah Clarke, general manager of Kelper Stores, called the development a major milestone that would broaden product choices for local shoppers.
Iceland Foods currently operates more than 950 stores across the United Kingdom, including its Food Warehouse format. The Falklands store represents a notable geographic expansion for the frozen food retailer.
