A non-league goalkeeper based in southeast London faces an extraordinary dilemma. George Kamurasi, captain of SE Dons in the Southern Counties East League Premier Division, has been selected as the next ruler of Uganda’s Tooro Kingdom following the death of his cousin, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
King Oyo passed away at 34 while receiving treatment for cancer, prompting a royal committee to choose his successor. The late monarch had ascended the throne in 1995 at just three years old, making him one of the world’s youngest crowned rulers at the time.
Known as ‘Big G’ among teammates, Kamurasi plays at Level 9 of English football’s pyramid structure. The 36-year-old British citizen is reportedly hesitant about relocating from London, where he lives with his wife and son, to assume royal duties in Uganda. His selection has sparked debate among the Tooro people, with some questioning whether someone raised in the UK can adequately represent their kingdom.
Kamurasi’s grandfather, King George Rukidi III, hosted Queen Elizabeth during her 1954 visit to Uganda. The goalkeeper may miss King Oyo’s funeral this weekend due to a scheduling conflict with a cup match for his club.
