Smithsonian Chief Lonnie Bunch Announces Retirement Amid White House Pressure Over Museum Direction

Lonnie Bunch III, head of the Smithsonian Institution since 2019, announced his retirement Tuesday following months of escalating tension with the Trump administration over how America’s museums present the nation’s history. He’ll leave by year’s end.

The departure marks the end of a turbulent chapter for Bunch, who founded the National Museum of African American History and Culture before taking the Smithsonian’s top job. “It is with very mixed emotions and heartfelt gratitude that I announce my retirement,” he said in a statement. “I have spent nearly half of my life working at and being part of the Smithsonian family.”

What triggered such scrutiny? The Trump administration has accused Smithsonian leadership of allowing progressive ideology to dominate exhibits, even suggesting possible violations of federal antidiscrimination law. A Department of the Interior letter claimed the institution’s culture may have created a hostile work environment and allocated resources based on race and ethnicity, though no specific evidence was provided.

A White House report released two months ago branded museum leaders as “radical activists who cannot be trusted.” The report specifically targeted the National Museum of American History, arguing its leadership failed to tell history “in a way that is inspiring, unifying, and worthy of our great republic.”

Bunch leaves behind an institution he clearly loved, expressing pride in what his team accomplished. Still, his exit clears the path for Trump to potentially install new leadership aligned with his vision for America’s cultural institutions.
