One year after losing her husband to a gunman’s bullet, Erika Kirk has opened up about the crushing weight of grief and how she’s found ways to keep moving forward. The widow penned an emotional essay for the New York Times, sharing intimate details about surviving the unthinkable.

Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University on September 10, 2025. More than 2,000 people watched the tragedy unfold. His widow has since assumed leadership of the conservative campus organization he founded.

How does someone navigate such public loss? For Kirk, it started with advice from Second Lady Usha Vance: get through the next 15 minutes. That simple guidance became her lifeline through birthdays, holidays, and countless firsts without her husband.

“At first, I needed to survive the next 15 minutes,” Kirk wrote. “Over time, I’ve realized that Charlie would want me to live them.”

The essay deliberately avoided political divisions. Kirk wanted to speak to universal human experience, reminding readers that grief doesn’t care about your politics. She’s left raising two children while carrying forward her late husband’s mission of fostering dialogue across ideological lines.
