Peter Obi’s Running Mate Choice Sparks Controversy as 2027 Campaigns Begin

The Nigerian Democratic Congress has told former Labour Party vice presidential candidate Datti Baba-Ahmed to accept Peter Obi’s decision to partner with Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for the 2027 presidential race. Theo Abu Agada, the NDC’s Director of New Media and Strategic Communications, accused Baba-Ahmed of ing Obi across multiple platforms since the announcement.

Obi, who ran with Baba-Ahmed in 2023 under the Labour Party, has switched to the NDC with Kwankwaso as his new running mate. The move represents a significant political realignment ahead of the presidential election scheduled for January 16, 2027.

Meanwhile, preparations intensify for the February 6 governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across 28 states. Eight states including Anambra, Edo, and Ondo won’t participate due to off-cycle election calendars.

Can opposition parties exploit internal grievances to unseat the ruling APC? Political observers say defections, grassroots mobilization, and incumbency advantages will shape the contests. In Nasarawa, former Inspector General of Police Mohammed Abubakar Adamu secured the Social Democratic Party ticket after failing to clinch the APC nomination, setting up what promises to be a high-stakes battle.

Agada insists the NDC will improve Nigerians’ living standards better than the current administration. Whether voters buy that pitch remains the ultimate question as campaigns officially kick off Wednesday.
