Atiku Claims US President Trump Backs Fuel Subsidy Restoration Plan

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has claimed that United States President Donald Trump endorses his controversial plan to restore Nigeria’s fuel subsidy. The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate made the assertion on Sunday through his spokesman, Phrank Shaibu, as he intensifies his campaign ahead of the 2027 elections.

Atiku framed his proposal as a production subsidy. His pitch? Support domestic refining, increase supply, and ensure Nigerians benefit at the pump. He argues that the American government understands the value of backing strategic energy production, suggesting his approach mirrors policies employed in the US.

The presidential hopeful didn’t hold back criticism of the current administration. He accused President Tinubu’s government of readily granting waivers and incentives to multinational oil companies while ing relief measures for ordinary citizens. “Why does intervention suddenly become bad economics when ordinary Nigerians are meant to benefit?” Atiku asked through his spokesman.

What remains unclear is the basis for claiming Trump’s support. No official statement from the White House or the US government has confirmed this endorsement. The claim comes as fuel subsidy removal continues to drive Nigeria’s cost of living crisis, making it a central issue for 2027 presidential hopefuls.
