Plateau Police Issue Strict Warning on Illegal Drone Use, Operators Face Arrest

Residents and organizations in Plateau State now face arrest if they operate drones without proper authorization. The Plateau State Police Command issued the stern warning through its spokesman, SP Alfred Alabo, on Sunday.

What exactly does the law require? According to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations 2023, specifically Part 17 covering Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems, operators must first secure permits from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. That’s the only agency with the power to approve drone flights in Nigeria. Operators also need an approved security programme before takeoff.

The rules don’t stop there. Flight details must be submitted in advance, including locations, schedules and safety protocols. Drones must stay within the operator’s visual range and respect approved altitudes. Flying over restricted zones is strictly prohibited.

Police emphasized their zero tolerance approach. Equipment will be confiscated. Criminal prosecution will follow for violations. They’re particularly concerned about drones being weaponized or used to transport explosives and unauthorized cargo.

The Command urged residents to report any suious drone activity to the nearest police station immediately, as they work alongside other security agencies to enforce compliance across the state.
