Nigel Farage Faces Police Scrutiny Over Reform UK Donations Scandal as Conference Derails

Nigel Farage is battling to contain a donations scandal that has thrown Reform UK into crisis, with the Metropolitan Police and Electoral Commission now assessing reports into alleged electoral law violations. The controversy erupted after Channel 4 News broadcast undercover footage from investigative group Verbatim, accusing the party of accepting funds from a US company to commission three polls at £32,500 each earlier this year.

British electoral law is clear. Political donations can only come from UK voters or UK-registered companies. Yet the footage showed Reform’s head of policy James Orr and Farage’s close aide Dan Jukes apparently proposing workarounds for an American businessman to donate £500,000 through his British son.

Both men stepped down immediately. Jukes, whose relationship with Farage has been described as father and son, and Orr, the party’s policy architect, resigned just as Reform’s Birmingham conference was set to begin. The timing couldn’t have been worse for a party hoping to present its strategy for the first 100 days in power.

Speaking to the BBC, Farage admitted the comments were “injudicious at best” and acknowledged the optics looked bad. “We are not the first people to be involved in a row over donations,” he said, though he claimed he “wasn’t even listening” during some interactions with the undercover journalists posing as donors. What was meant to be a professional showcase became damage control instead.
