Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway should brace for controlled traffic starting September 8 as the Federal Government begins a two-week repair of deteriorated expansion joints at Kara Bridge. The intervention, announced by the Federal Ministry of Works following a Saturday inspection, aims to address what officials describe as a growing safety hazard that has contributed to multiple accidents.
Richard Adeleye, Acting Controller of the Federal Ministry of Works in Ogun State, explained that the expansion joints have exceeded their service life. The damage poses serious risks. According to Adeleye, further delays could trigger structural problems including cracking and buckling of the bridge itself.
Repairs will happen in stages to keep traffic moving. One side of the bridge will close first while vehicles use the opposite lane under controlled conditions, then work shifts to the other side after seven days. Personnel from FRSC, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps, and LASTMA will manage the flow around the approximately 100-metre restricted zone.
What should drivers expect during this period? Reduced speeds and possible delays, though Adeleye assured that vehicles won’t stop completely. He’s recommending alternative routes through Ikorodu-Ogijo Road or roads around Sango and Abeokuta for those heading toward Ibadan. The new expansion joints should last between 10 and 20 years once installed.
