Nigel Farage delivered closing remarks at Reform UK’s Birmingham conference on Saturday while his party grapples with serious allegations about illegal foreign donations. The timing couldn’t be worse. Just days before the event, Channel 4 broadcast undercover footage that appeared to show senior Reform figures discussing how to disguise donations from foreign sources.
What exactly did the footage reveal? The investigation by undercover group Verbatim captured Dan Jukes, a long-serving Farage aide, and James Orr, the party’s head of policy, in conversations about accepting foreign money. Both men have since stood down pending an internal investigation.
Accepting donations from foreign companies, including in-kind contributions such as polling services, constitutes a criminal offence under UK law. The party has been reported to police, and the Liberal Democrats have asked Parliament’s standards watchdog to investigate. Farage himself was already under scrutiny about donations Reform has received, including £5 million from a wealthy backer.
Throughout Friday’s events, Farage repeatedly defended the party’s actions, dismissing Jukes’s comments as ‘loose pub talk’ that included ‘a couple of boasts that simply were not true’. He insisted Reform had broken no laws. His headline speech was delayed by what organisers called a ‘security alert’, adding further drama to an already turbulent conference weekend.
