FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has leveled serious allegations against Rotimi Amaechi, the vice presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress. During his monthly media chat on Wednesday, Wike claimed that Amaechi, while serving as Rivers State governor from 2007 to 2015, shut down the state’s judiciary system. The action allegedly forced a pregnant woman to give birth behind bars.
The accusation emerged as Wike criticized the Nigerian Bar Association for inviting Amaechi to speak at its recent annual conference in Port Harcourt. Should someone who allegedly undermined the judicial system be given such a platform? Wike clearly thinks not.
He drew a pointed comparison to his current role. If he were to shut down courts in the FCT today, he argued, he shouldn’t be given any platform to defend such actions. The minister’s comments reflect the ongoing political tensions between the two Rivers State politicians.
Amaechi has not yet responded to these allegations. The claims add another layer to the complex political rivalry that has defined Nigerian politics in recent years, particularly as both men maintain significant influence in the country’s political landscape.
