A senior member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress has sharply contrasted the motivations of Nigeria’s leading presidential contenders ahead of the 2027 elections. Ibrahim Abdulkarim claims President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar are chasing power. Peter Obi, he insists, wants soing different.
Appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday, Abdulkarim made his position clear. “Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar, they are looking for power. Mr Peter Obi is looking for service,” the NDC chieftain stated. He argued that Obi seeks to offer himself for national transformation, particularly on behalf of young Nigerians who feel unable to create ce themselves.
But what drives this distinction in Abdulkarim’s view? He believes Nigeria’s core problem isn’t ignorance of the nation’s challenges. Rather, it’s the absence of political courage to implement solutions. Many politicians privately acknowledge what needs fixing yet refuse to act publicly, he claimed.
Meanwhile, opposition parties began fresh talks in Abuja on Monday about fielding a single candidate against Tinubu in 2027. The discussions included the ADC, NDC, Allied Peoples Movement, PDP, Peoples Redemption Party, and Social Democratic Party. Whether these coalition efforts will succeed remains uncertain as the political battle intensifies.
