UK Politics in Flux as Farage Returns to Parliament Amid Standards Questions, Starmer Exits

British politics experienced a dramatic double feature on Tuesday as Nigel Farage was sworn in again as Member of Parliament for Clacton, even as questions emerged about his claims of facing expanded ethics investigations. Meanwhile, former Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced he’s leaving Parliament entirely, barely a month after being ousted from the top job.

Farage won the Clacton by-election with an increased majority, returning to Westminster after triggering the contest by resigning in July. Back then, the Reform UK leader claimed “yet another standards investigation is under way” into his finances, describing the ethics system as a “political tool.” That’s not quite accurate. The parliamentary standards commissioner had not actually launched a second investigation or widened the existing one at that point, according to those familiar with the matter.

The original probe, launched in May, concerns a £5 million gift from Thailand-based donor Christopher Harborne before the 2024 election. Farage initially said it covered security costs, then called it a Brexit reward. Fresh complaints emerged in July about funding from George Cottrell, his friend and convicted fraudster, but no formal expansion has been confirmed.

Starmer’s departure marks a swift fall from grace. He led Labour to a landslide just two years ago in July 2024 but suffered some of the worst approval ratings of any British prime minister. Internal pressure forced his resignation in June, with Andy Burnham replacing him as Labour leader and PM after a leadership contest. The former leader told constituents in Holborn and St Pancras he wants to “pass the baton” and focus on international affairs, defence and security.
