President Bola Tinubu on Monday welcomed Nigeria’s economic performance as the National Bureau of Statistics reported a 4.43 percent GDP growth in the second quarter of 2026, up from 4.23 percent in the same period last year. The nominal GDP reached N119.27 trillion, representing an 18.43 percent increase from N100.7 trillion recorded previously. Growth was recorded across agriculture, manufacturing, oil and gas, and the service sector.
Can the momentum be sustained? The President certainly thinks so. Speaking through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu said the economy is on an irreversible path to recovery. He stressed that three years of difficult reforms have ilised the foundation, adding that the nation’s foreign reserves now stand at their highest in 17 years.
The same day brought another major announcement. The Federal Ministry of Transportation revealed plans for a high-speed rail corridor connecting Lagos to Maiduguri, with trains capable of reaching 360 kilometres per hour. Permanent Secretary Olufunso Adebiyi disclosed this at the 19th National Council on Transportation in Abuja, describing it as part of efforts to build an integrated national transportation network.
Security news also dominated Monday’s headlines. President Tinubu confirmed that 15 National Youth Service Corps members and six other citizens abducted in Kogi State have been rescued. The operation, conducted by military personnel, police, the Department of State Services, and local vigilantes, freed all 21 hostages from forests in Ofu Local Government Area. They’re receiving medical attention before reuniting with families.
