Justin Gaethje has addressed the possibility of facing Conor McGregor inside the Octagon, though the UFC lightweight champion doesn’t believe the fight will materialize. Speaking in a recent interview, Gaethje expressed willingness to take the bout if offered but acknowledged the reality of the situation.
The American fighter showed unexpected compassion for McGregor, who recently underwent knee surgery following an ACL injury sustained at UFC 329. “If it came to my table, I would entertain it. But I would doubt that,” Gaethje stated. “He’s going through his own stuff. I don’t even want to s*** on that guy anymore. I’ve done it. That doesn’t work because I’ve tried.”
McGregor’s UFC 329 return ended in disaster. After five years away from competition, the Irishman’s main event clash with Max Holloway was stopped just over a minute into the fight when he injured his knee seconds into the bout. The referee called off the contest immediately, leaving McGregor facing another lengthy recovery period.
Gaethje’s shift in tone marks a departure from typical pre-fight trash talk between top contenders. Whether the two will ever share the cage remains uncertain, but the champion’s realistic assessment suggests he’s already looking elsewhere for his next challenge.
