Rayan Cherki had a point to prove. The 23-year-old French midfielder, frustrated after being left on the bench for Manchester City’s season opener, delivered an emphatic answer at Selhurst Park on August 28th with a match-winning brace in City’s 4-1 demolition of Crystal Palace.
Manager Enzo Maresca couldn’t hide his admiration. “His performance off the ball was unbelievable,” the City boss said, praising not just Cherki’s two goals but his defensive work in neutralizing Palace midfielder Adam Wharton. It’s one thing to showcase flair going forward. Tracking back and doing the dirty work? That’s what separates good players from great ones.
Erling Haaland also bagged a brace, opening the scoring in the 17th minute with a looping header before sealing the win in the 85th minute. Cherki’s goals came in rapid succession during the second half, the first a delightful run through Palace’s defense in the 54th minute, followed by a deflected strike five minutes later. Palace briefly threatened when an own goal from Gianluigi Donnarumma made it 2-1, but the comeback never materialized.
With six points from two matches, Maresca’s City tenure is off to a flying start. Cherki’s transformation from bench warmer to match winner suggests the new manager has plenty of ing weapons at his disposal.
