Global attention splits between Central Asian diplomacy and American monetary policy this week. Singapore’s Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong concluded his first official visit to Kazakhstan on August 27, calling the relationship “an account well worth cultivating” during a press briefing at the St. Regis Astana Hotel. Trade and investment between the nations have surged in recent years, with Singapore companies showing growing interest in Kazakhstan’s expanding economy.

Lee emphasized the goodwill Singapore enjoys in the region. Kazakhstan still remembers warmly when founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew visited in September 1991, just three months before the country gained independence.

Meanwhile, U.S. stock futures traded flat on August 28 as investors awaited Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s Jackson Hole speech at 10am ET. What’s his strategy for taming inflation? Bond yields edged higher, with the 10-year hitting 4.69% and the three-year climbing to 5.21%. Only a handful of tech giants have carried the market recently, with the Nasdaq rally masking weakness across most sectors.

PayPal tumbled 16% in premarket trading after potential acquirers Advent and Stripe walked away. Copper, however, headed for its ninth consecutive weekly gain, the longest streak since 2020. The contrasting developments underscore how regional partnerships and monetary policy continue shaping global markets in unpredictable ways.
