Thirty-six Nigerians were deported from four European countries this week in a coordinated operation that reflects increasingly aggressive immigration enforcement across the continent. The charter flight, organized by Germany and executed between Wednesday night and Thursday morning, carried 41 people total to Lagos and Accra.
Germany accounted for the largest share. Twenty-nine Nigerians were among the 35 deportees sent from German territory, alongside five Ghanaians and one Gambian. Austria contributed three Nigerian deportees, Luxembourg two, and Hungary one. At least one of those removed from Austria had previous drug-related convictions.
Why the sudden surge in deportations? Austria’s Interior Minister Gerhard Karner made the government’s position crystal clear. He declared that authorities had removed more illegal residents and criminal offenders in the first half of this year than ever before, calling it part of a “consistent deportation policy” that won’t be deterred.
The operation isn’t an isolated incident. Germany alone deported 137 Nigerians across five separate charter flights between February and June 2026. Those flights carried between 23 and 37 people each month, suggesting a systematic approach to immigration enforcement that shows no signs of slowing down.
