Presidency Slams Atiku Over Conflicting Fuel Subsidy Statements as 2027 Campaign Heats Up

The Presidency has launched a sharp rebuke against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, accusing him of policy confusion after his camp issued three contradictory statements on fuel subsidy within days. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, questioned whether Atiku is seriously proposing economic policy or simply exploiting Nigerians’ temporary discomfort for political gain.

What exactly is Atiku’s position? The confusion began when spokesperson Paul Ibe said Atiku would restore subsis before phasing them out. Senior aide Phrank Shaibu quickly contradicted this, calling it an unauthorized and misleading characterization. Hours later, Atiku himself weighed in, insisting his position hasn’t ced and that he’d restore a targeted subsidy to put purchasing power back in Nigerian hands.

The inconsistencies reveal a lack of basic understanding of the fuel sector, according to the Presidency. Three different positions in one week don’t inspire confidence in voters seeking concrete solutions to economic challenges.

Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State is rallying supporters ahead of the 2027 elections. Campaign Committee Chairman Ladi Adebutu urged voters to remain at polling units after casting ballots, following the process through to collation centers. His running mate, Lateefat Sowunmi-Kolapo, echoed this call, telling residents not to be intimidated and to stand by their votes.

The battle lines for 2027 are clearly drawn. Whether Atiku can clarify his economic vision remains to be seen.
