Omoyele Sowore isn’t mincing words. The African Action Congress presidential candidate has ignited fresh debate by demanding that Nigerians stop addressing their political leaders with the honorific ‘Excellency.’ His reasoning? They simply haven’t earned it.
In a Tuesday post on his verified X account, Sowore took direct aim at the country’s political class. He argued that decades of corruption, poverty, and failed governance make the prestigious title absurd. “There is nothing excellent about decades of corruption, poverty, insecurity, darkness, broken hospitals, collapsing schools, and failed governance,” he declared.
Why should citizens honor leaders who’ve presided over national decline? The activist politician didn’t hold back in his assessment of Nigeria’s current state. His critique comes just a day after he publicly challenged prominent figures including Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi over their support for fuel subsidy removal.
The timing matters. Sowore has positioned himself as a consistent voice against policies he believes harm ordinary Nigerians, even demanding apologies from politicians who backed the controversial subsidy removal. His latest salvo suggests a broader frustration with the gap between political titles and actual performance in office.
