Nigerian Opposition Figures Frame 2027 Election as Choice Between Elites and Struggling Masses

Nigeria’s political opposition is sharpening its message ahead of the 2027 general election, framing the contest as a battle between entrenched political elites and millions of struggling citizens. At the Nigerian Bar Association conference debate on Monday, African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore didn’t mince words. He demanded apologies from former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Obi for supporting fuel subsidy removal, a policy he’s consistently opposed for over a decade.

“They are robbing Peter Obi to pay for Bola Tinubu,” Sowore declared, accusing the government of shifting policy burdens onto ordinary Nigerians. He challenged his rivals on their reversals, noting they only recently ced positions on subsis after years of supporting removal.

What’s driving this confrontation?

Rabiu Kwankwaso, vice presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, echoed similar themes in a Sunday statement criticizing the newly constituted APC Presidential Campaign Council. He questioned what voters are being asked to support, arguing the council comprises the same actors who’ve defended policies causing widespread hardship. Families struggle with food inflation, young people face shrinking job opportunities, and businesses operate under severe strain from ongoing insecurity.

The heated rhetoric suggests 2027 won’t be fought on policy nuances alone. Opposition figures are betting Nigerians will respond to a clear choice framed around economic survival.
