US Pushes for Expanded UN Sanctions as Sudan War Enters Fourth Year

The United States is calling for tougher United Nations sanctions against both sides in Sudan’s brutal civil war, hoping to force the warring factions toward negotiations. The conflict has now ed at least 59,000 people and displaced some 13 million in its fourth year.

Why hasn’t the international community done more? That’s what President Donald Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, addressed Monday before the UN Security Council. He pointed to the financial, military and political support flowing to both Sudan’s government forces and the rival Rapid Support Forces as a key driver of the violence.

The numbers are staggering. Parts of the African nation have already descended into famine. Millions flee their homes while external actors continue pumping weapons into the conflict.

Boulos didn’t name names, but the implications were clear. Egypt has openly backed Sudan’s military, while UN experts and human rights groups accuse the United Arab Emirates of arming the RSF, though the UAE denies this.

The proposed US resolution would expand an existing arms embargo from Sudan’s Darfur region to cover the entire country. Drones and related technologies would fall under the ban too, experts say both sides are racing to acquire new drone models.

Whether the Security Council will act remains uncertain, but the pressure is mounting.
