Prime Minister Andy Burnham stood firm on two fronts during his first officially the last time I was in the car and I was in the car and I was in the car and I was in the car and I was in the car and I was in the car and I was in the car and I was in the car and visit to Ukraine on August 24, 2026. He wouldn’t rule out tax rises in his autumn budget. And he sent Moscow a clear message: a new British government doesn’t mean a softer stance on the war.

Speaking to broadcasters in Mykhailivska Square, Kyiv, Burnham marked 35 years of Ukrainian independence with a significant military pledge. Britain is releasing classified information on components of the Scalp cruise missile, the French version of the Storm Shadow, enabling Ukraine to assemble the weapons domestically. This isn’t just another arms shipment. It’s a fundamental shift toward weapons independence for Kyiv.

The Kremlin wasn’t pleased. Spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Britain of “throwing oil on the fire,” but Downing Street insisted there’s been no escalation. Burnham countered with accusations of “outrageous threats” from Russia, telling reporters that Britain cannot let up when facing illegal invasion on Europe’s borders.

What about those tax rises? The prime minister told journalists he refuses to be unrealistic about the prospect, suggesting difficult decisions lie ahead in his autumn budget. Supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities may come with a domestic price tag British taxpayers will soon discover.
